Soap Bar 2020

"Soap Bar 2020," a DCG hologram on glass by artist Guillermo Heinze. The piece resembles a translucent soap bar, refracting vivid, abstract light fields in blues, greens, and purples. As light interacts with the object from different angles, the holographic image shifts dynamically. The heavy, glassy form evokes the paradoxical sensation of light as a dense, tangible material. Created during the 2020 pandemic, the object subtly references the global ritual of handwashing.

Soap Bar 2020 is a dichromated gelatin (DCG) hologram created by Guillermo Heinze in response to the surreal atmosphere of the year 2020. Made on glass, the piece captures abstract, shifting fields of light that morph with the viewer’s perspective, creating a sensation of physical weight within the ephemeral. Its form, reminiscent of a bar of soap, ties into the collective memory of 2020’s global handwashing frenzy—a ritual transformed into an act of survival. With this work, Heinze invites the viewer to reflect on how something as intangible as light can be perceived as dense and pressing, mirroring the psychological and physical gravity of the times.
